My first
thought was this project would be rather simple - look, posters, now
sort and digitize them. Hey, some scrapbooks, that should make the
sorting easier. Oh, there are 25 years of Lower Merion High School
theater company years missing? Alright then.
I started with cleaning out the publicity closet (publicity closet = 6x7 room, walls covered with signatures of former students, floor covered in paint spills of former students, and a sink filled with the scent of two years worth of turpentine). In this closet I rediscovered a Show People scrapbook (1938-1941) and two Players scrapbooks (1966-1980), along with random Players posters (1967-2008), the problem became what happened during 1942-1965? I could not find anything in the entire school represented a Lower Merion High School theater company during that time period, so I checked somewhere else.
The
Lower Merion Historical Society houses ninety years worth of Lower
Merion High School yearbooks and I spent one Saturday digitizing pages
covering Show People, Senior play, thespian society, and stage crew.
With the discovery of an annual senior play along with the Show People
productions I came to the conclusion between 1942-1963 Show People was
Lower Merion High School's theater company, and once Lower Merion High
School reopened in 1966 it was replace with Lower Merion Players.
I
will not claim every date is accurate and every production is
represented, because I am 100% there are shows missing. Maybe the date
is missing, or there is no poster, or maybe there were six shows
performed during one season but only four have been discovered. Maybe I
ran out of time to post photos from 2004's Cinderella or maybe the editing software did not allow me to post the program from Live On The Air.
I spent my entire senior year moving boxes of posters from the publicity closet into JJG's room and counting the 34 photos taken of 1970's Once Upon A Mattress, and I am proud of the first Players archive.
